"He's always done everything he said he'd do. That's who he is." ― Elizabeth about Gregory

Only You is the tenth episode of Season One of The Americans on FX, and the tenth episode overall.

Synopsis[]

After Amador's murder the FBI begins a massive manhunt for the killer. When they start closing in on Gregory, the KGB decides to send him to Moscow. Despite Elizabeth's best efforts he refuses to go, even if it means his life.

Plot[]

Elizabeth drops Philip off at his motel, telling him to stop replaying Amador's death in his mind, and wondering what he could have done differently. Agent Gaad tells his staff the FBI will be devoting all its resources to finding Amador's killer. In the vault, Stan asks Gaad if Amador's ring has turned up. Gaad tells Stan to not dwell on killing Vlad as "In a war, blood gets spilled...so don't think twice about what you did". Gaad orders Stan to go home but he visits Philip in his motel room instead. Philip then finds himself in the awkward position of having to comfort a drunk Stan about Amador's death.

We're in a war now.
In their safe house the next morning, Nina and Stan argue, each demanding the other tell them who killed their colleague, and accusing each other of withholding information. At the Jennings, Paige and Henry give Elizabeth a hard time getting ready for school until Philip arrives. He tells Elizabeth that through Martha he found out that Amador's ring wasn't on his body, that it might be in the car used to transport Amador which Gregory's team disposed of. Gaad tells Stan that the ring was found being pawned by a salvage yard owner. At the yard, Stan coerces the owner into giving a vague description of those who dropped off the car and he takes him to FBI HQ to look at mug shots.

You tell me everything you know.
Elizabeth meets Gregory at a bar and tells him about the ring. (♫ Blue Shoes - Better ♫) Gregory's team swept the car clean before dumping it in a salvage yard, but they apparently didn't catch the ring, which Amador intentionally hid in the trunk as evidence. Elizabeth also mentions her separation from Philip. Gregory asks why she is telling him this and begins to stroke her hair, hoping Elizabeth will now reconnect romantically with him. She demurs and assures him that the situation with Amador will blow over. The salvage yard owner recognizes one of Gregory's associates, Curtis, from the mug shots. Stan realizes he saw Curtis in Philadelphia, at the site where Joyce Ramirez was taken. The FBI finds and arrests him.

I'm upset now.
The Jennings meet with Claudia and all deduce it is only a matter of time before Curtis leads the FBI to Gregory. Claudia concludes Gregory will have to be exfiltrated, and asks their opinions on how well he will adjust to a new life in Moscow. Philip and Elizabeth disagree and Philip angers Elizabeth by expressing concern Gregory might opt to turn on them instead. Claudia implies that if Gregory can't be convinced to leave, they will need to kill him. In an FBI interrogation room, Stan tells Curtis that if he did know that his gang was actually working for the KGB, he should keep quiet. Despite their differences, he points out that they are both Americans. Appealing to his patriotism, if he didn't know he was working for the KGB, he asks him to come clean.

I feel like revenge, you know?
Elizabeth then meets with Gregory and is unsuccessful in her attempt to persuade him. Gregory suggests several alternatives, including moving to Compton with a new identify, cosmetic surgery to alter his appearance, and the two of them running away together. At FBI HQ, Gaad shows his team slides on Gregory. Claudia visits Gregory in a safe house. She firmly tells him that Moscow is the only option for him as she won't tolerate any risk that in the future, the Jenning's cover might be blown by him. She also says they planted evidence in his apartment that he killed Amador so the FBI will stop the manhunt. The FBI finds the evidence in Gregory's apartment. Gregory doesn't accept going to Moscow and gives every indication that he'd rather die now that his work is done.

S01E10-Claudia meets Gregory
I just wanted to live for something.
Claudia leaves and talks to Philip, expressing a desire to keep trying to convince Gregory to go to Moscow, but that "if this has to end the hard way," she doesn't want Elizabeth to be the one who has to kill him. Philip agrees. At home, Stan tells Sandra they are close to finding Amador's killer. Stan tells her that he's protected her by not telling her terrible things he's done so they could have a normal family life. Sandra pleads with Stan to quit the FBI and move away so the three of them can be together. A the safe house, Elizabeth and Gregory laugh and have a last meal together. He says he fell for her because she is tough, uncompromising and committed. He tells her to find someone else besides Philip who will love her for who she is. They make love.

Find somebody who will love you for being so strong.
In the morning, Elizabeth quickly packs a bag and Gregory announces he's not going with her. He instead shares his intention to commit "suicide by cop." They argue about the risk and Elizabeth eventually pulls her gun on him. Philip enters the room and asks Elizabeth to wait outside. Elizabeth begs Philip to let Gregory leave which he complies with. After giving Elizabeth a final kiss, Gregory goes out onto the street, where he is soon engaged in a gun battle with multiple policemen, and is fatally shot. (♫ Roberta Flack - To Love Somebody ♫) Philip watches a hockey game in his motel room while Stan stares with satisfaction at a picture of a dead Gregory. Elizabeth hears of his death while watching the evening news over dinner with her children.
