Gabriel stuns Philip and Elizabeth with a sudden announcement and a crushing revelation about Philip’s past. Stan and Aderholt draw a fly into their web, while Oleg and Ruslan ambush their first suspect.
Elizabeth meets with Gabriel to tell him what Ben said. Gabriel is surprised, but feels good will still be done if they can get some of his “super wheat” to send home. He tells her she and Phillip need to stay with Stobert and Kemp a little longer. Elizabeth tries to hide her disappointment. She tells Gabriel she understands it’s part of the job, but implies she feels differently now than she used to about it. Gabriel tells her “It’s a long career,” and reassures her there’s nothing wrong with the way she feels.
Mischa gets off a plane in Russia and is met by someone from the KGB. He will be given his old job back. Claudia tells Gabriel he did the right thing, but he remains troubled, saying “I’ve never lied to them before.” Later, he visits the Lincoln Memorial at night.
Ruslan and Oleg harass Dmitri again, and when he refuses to give up any names, they have him put in jail. Oleg again sits waiting in a park for his CIA blackmailers and again, no one shows. Towards the end of the episode, he goes to the rooftop of his apartment and burns the cassette tape.
Gabriel surprises the Jennings by announcing he’s returning home. He claims he’s simply tired, but they don’t believe him. “It’s just time,” he says. He warns Phillip that The Center is going to continue to be concerned about him, adding: “To be honest, I’m worried. You’ve seen too much. You’ve done too much.”
Ben teaches Elizabeth Tai Chi, saying she needs something to help her relax. Back home, Elizabeth dons a disguise and visits a psychiatrist, creating a key that works in his door lock, and noting how he secures his files.
Paige answers the doorbell and speaks with a Mary Kay beauty consultant. Elizabeth quickly shuts her down. Paige tells Elizabeth she was rude. Elizabeth then sits in her car outside Young-Hee’s house, remembering their friendship, and is surprised to see another family now lives there.
Phillip continues to have recurrent memories of his father bringing items home. Once, he brought boots that, when his mother scrubbed the mud off, turned the water red with what looked like blood. He also remembers men in Tobolsk who didn’t like him or his brother, and would stare at them. He feels like none of this should bother him. Elizabeth encourages Phillip to talk to Gabriel about his family, saying Gabriel would have seen his personnel file, and it may be his last chance to ask.
Phillip asks Gabriel about his father and learns that contrary what his mother told him, he was not a logger but a guard at a penal camp, employed by a precursor of the KGB. Gabriel tries to comfort Phillip: “Those were different times. It’s hard to explain. Who knows what your father did. He had his job. A lot of things happened. You think it was his fault? He was nobody. We were all nobodies. It’s been over for a long time.”
Phillip arrives home and sits in his car in the garage. Elizabeth joins him and he tells her what Gabriel said about his dad being a guard in a prison camp. “I didn’t know anything. My own parents, and I didn’t know anything about them at all.” In the final scene of the episode, Phillip and Elizabeth take Paige to meet Gabriel.
