Behind the Red Door is the sixth episode of Season Two of The Americans on FX, and the ninteenth episode overall.

Synopsis

A dangerous Naval officer becomes the key to Philip and Elizabeth's mission as well as a potential threat to their family's safety. Lucia, a Sandinista intelligence officer working with the Jennings, is tasked with getting Elizabeth access to Capitol Hill. Stan struggles with the potential costs of protecting Nina.

Plot

Claudia gives the Jennings instructions on killing Larrick if they discover he is the Connors' murderer. Meanwhile, Stan meets with Oleg, who gives him three days to comply with his demands: his FBI security logs. Posing as CIA security, the Jennings meet Larrick. He claims he wanted to kill the Connors, but someone else got to them first. Elizabeth and Phillip believe him. They want more information on “Martial Eagle,” which he mentions, and is also in his file, so they decide not to kill him yet. Phillip asks Kate to find out what she can about Martial Eagle, and tells her they want to eliminate Larrick once he is no longer of use to them.

Stan arrives home to find his wife has painted the front door red. He absentmindedly goes through the motions of eating dinner with her and Matthew; they are discussing the death of John Belushi. Later at work, he obtains Oleg's travel logs. Oleg meets Arkady and tells him the ARPANET is the future.

Elizabeth tells Phillip Martha said Clark is a “wild animal” in bed. She continues to press Phillip about this on multiple occasions, to his annoyance. The Jennings discover Paige quit the volleyball team, and become upset, saying she should have waited until the end of the season. They again meet with Kate, who tells them Martial Eagle is an operation to train Nicaraguan Contras at a secret base on US soil. The Centre is tasking them with assassinating the field commanders and exposing the camps. Because Larrick is their way into the camp, the Centre has ordered the Jennings not to kill him.

Elizabeth meets with Lucia and requests her help to get into a congressman’s private office. Lucia seduces the congressman's aide, Carl, and lures him into the office to have sex while Elizabeth photographs files, including ones from an “ARPANET Information Brochure.” From his files, the Jennings learn that two field commanders will be at the Contra training camp in a week. The camp is located somewhere in the woods of Jefferson National Forest, but even Larrick, who’s part of the senior training team, won’t be told of the exact location until given the orders to go. The Jennings debate going against the Centre’s orders and killing Larrick now, but decide it will be easier to get into the training camp with his assistance. But in order to do that, they realize they will have to tell him the truth about who they are.

Stan shows up unexpectedly at Gaad's home, and tells him Nina has been compromised. Gaad refuses to hear anything else, saying “I’m about to be called to testify, before a closed door congressional committee, thanks to the shit you pulled. Don’t tell me anything more that I can’t hear.”

Elizabeth explains to Lucia their plans to sneak onto the Martial Eagle training camp. She also tells Lucia it will be necessary to kill Carl, so nothing will be traced back to her, and they argue. Lucia tells Elizabeth “I know how to do my job,” and “I don’t need so many lessons.”

Later that night, when Phillip comes home in his Clark disguise, Elizabeth seduces him, saying she wants to meet "Clark." Phillip is confused and somewhat offended. Elizabeth demands to see the animal Clark is, instead of Phillip's sensitive nature, and he finally relents by violently having sex with her, shouting "Is that what you want?" After, he goes to the bathroom disgusted with himself and rips off his Clark wig, while Elizabeth lies on the bed sobbing.

Lucia hangs out with Carl; he prepares heroin and she poisons it when he briefly leaves the room. Soon after injecting it, he chokes on his vomit and dies. Elizabeth comes home and Paige tells her she quit volleyball because she had more fun at church. Paige says she wants her parents to come sometime, and Elizabeth seems receptive. She later joins Phillip washing dishes at the sink and asks "Are you mad at me?" Phillip replies: “Of course not.”

Stan tells Nina that Oleg knows about them, and that she will have to take a polygraph test to before being exfiltrated by the FBI. Nina becomes angry, says she's done “with all of this” and storms out. Phillip follows Larrick to a gay bar and confesses his identity and intentions. Elizabeth asks Claudia who to search next, if Larrick isn’t the Connors’ killer, and she replies "me." Claudia tells Elizabeth she was in a relationship which may be inadvertently exposed the Connors' identity. Claudia also tells Elizabeth “I was wrong about Phillip. You’re lucky to have him.”
