Adam Dorwin (Codename: UDACHA) is a project manager at VISEOTech, a private sector company contractor of the US government, and a KGB informant running a spy-ring. The character is played by Michael Countryman.
Only appearing in COMINT, he appears to be suffering somewhat of a nervous breakdown after the recent death of his wife after 36 years of marriage. Whilst Elizabeth conducts a security check on him at home under the guide of VISEOTech internal security, he appears teary-eyed throughout and on the verge of breaking down. Elizabeth tells Claudia that he needs to meet with his handler ASAP for fear he could crack under real questioning.
He was recruited by Vasili Nikolaevich 23 years previously whilst Vasili was in America on a student visa.
As part of his company’s expansion into the Department of Defence’s Strategic Defence Initiative program, he has access to top-secret research on lasers, presumably in a laser-guidance capacity, for use in the US’s Anti-Ballistic Missile Program. His access to the program is much valued at the KGB - Arkady warns Vasili that the Soviet’s cannot lose Dorwin as it would also destroy Dorwin’s network with the company (two scientists, three executives, two support personnel).
Increasingly paranoid and desperate to speak to the one man he trusts, Dorwin calls Vasili at the Rezidentura, a conversation picked up by an FBI tap on the phone lines. Vasili is unable to meet with his agent due to the FBI changing the encryption codes on their radios leaving the KGB unable to tell if they are being followed. Phillip and Elizabeth eventually obtain the new codes, but once the FBI learns of Vasili’s arranged meet with Dorwin they again change the codes.
The KGB, torn between abandoning the meet and risking Dorwin “going off the deep end” or continuing and having Vasili potentially lead the FBI to Dorwin, decide to have Adam Dorwin killed. Elizabeth is seen at the location assassinating Dorwin with a single shot to the head. Staring at the body for ten seconds of screen time, she appears to reflect upon his death sadly.
